ABOUT

this website will grow with me.

critical thinker. university student. rock and roller. nonhistorian. loudmouth. hiphopper. triathlete. graphic designer. political theorist. writer. musician.

i graduated from queen's university in 2006 with a BA(hons) majoring in political studies and minoring in english language and literature. i am finishing the master's program in political science at UBC right now and will enter the phd program in september.

loosely defined, my academic interests lie in contemporary political theory, especially the politics of aesthetics, identity, communication, and narrative. i am interested in revisiting critical theory (most specifically that of Adorno, Horkheimer, and Habermas) after postmodernism, and in a broader context than the original euro-centric scope. i am also especially curious in probing the intersections between the theoretical traditions of different disciplines, such as the overlap between critical political theory and literary criticism, or that between aesthetic theory and politics.

i like to rock the geetar, slam the drums, sing, yell, and rap. in the past i have performed/recorded with the jazzy mathy rock outfit showerhead, and was one half of kingston's famous noisy-pop outfit tomate potate. presently, i'm caught between two solo-ish type projects, the first being buttasmooth, a post-grime indie hip hop endeavour (debut EP coming in august), and the second being the devon lougheed ego, simply solo musssick. i record things to the best of my abilities using Cubase SX3, a rode NT2, and an AKGc1000. lots and lots of mp3s are available by clicking HERE

i am a published writer of poetry and prose, hooplah, hooplah, hooplah. my interest in aesthetics naturally spills over into my writing. my first chapbook, entitled life lessons from your mucous membranes was released in 2006 by a bicycle made of anarchy press. it, and the accompanying 14-track solo cd, is available by clicking HERE. some online samples of my writing are available HERE.

as a graphic and web designer, my style can be described as "have no clue what i'm doing but sure won't let that stop me." i've done corporate-style websites and newspaper ads, but my bread and butter is something else; some of the more interesting gigposters and ads i have designed are available HERE.

i am in my second season of competition in triathlons. i have gone from a genuine middle-of-the-pack finisher to a genuine top-third-to-top-quarter-of-the-pack finisher. i ride a cervelo one that goes zoom when i pedal. i was thinking of posting my race results on this site. who knows, eh.

i'm a fake, i don't come from the streets. but there's only so many hours in a day, and i use them to make beats.
